The “portrait mode” on smartphone cameras is a real game changer. I use it for everything, not just for portraits. Not being able to control the depth of field was a big problem with smartphone cameras because everything was always in focus. In most photographs, there is always something specific to which you want to draw your viewers’ attention. Blurring the rest allows us to achieve this. In the photo above, your eyes are immediately drawn to the purple taro bun, not the background. Nothing is distracting you in this photo, so your mind can truly focus on the bun and appreciate its beauty
