Food for Thought

Every culture seems to pick rice or wheat as their primary source of starch. Most Asian cultures picked rice and most Western cultures picked wheat (a notable exception being Spain). For these Indonesian skewers, I should be paying attention to the meat, but what I loved about this plate is the bed of rice cubes. Such a great idea! If served on regular rice, we would need a fork to eat it, and it would be hard to eat the meat and rice together. We can eat these rice cubes with the skewer sticks, together with the meat.

The Japanese also serve rice in block forms too (mochi) but it’s usually for sweets. And, they use sweet (sticky) rice, not the regular kind, for mochi. The Indonesian version is made from regular rice. .
