Notice the imperfection? My New Zealander friend did as soon as it was served. Since everything else seemed perfect at this Japanese ramen place, the imperfection did stand out. And, aside from this imperfection, these pork buns were perfect.

The Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi celebrates imperfection. For instance, broken pottery would be repaired by filling the cracks with gold in order to appreciate the beauty of the pattern the cracks produced.

If the chef had painted this imperfection on the bun with, say, black sesame paste, perhaps I would have been awestruck by the beauty of it
