Food for Thought

Candy With History.

his random purchase from a Mexican bakery in Brooklyn, it turns out, has an interesting history according to my research. In 1676, a thirteen-year-old girl named Angelina in Santa Clara convent of Puebla, Mexico, invented this treat by boiling and reducing sweet potatoes into a paste and then adding sugar and pineapple (one pictured is orange). Apparently, many famous dishes of Mexico were invented by nuns like mole poblano.

These days, most candies are artificially flavored and made with artificial ingredients. It’s refreshing to have one made with real food
