Food for Thought

Supermarkets in NYC are as diverse as their customers. We train ourselves to find what we want as quickly as possible, and over time, we learn to automatically ignore everything else like they are banner ads on websites. But if you look carefully, there are some peculiar things.

Pictured above is from my nearest supermarket, Fine Fare in Lower East Side. It’s a bag of huge crackers. I’ve been to many Latino restaurants in my neighborhood but I’ve never seen them serve these. This, I believe, is a glimpse into what some people eat at home that restaurants don’t serve. I’m trying to imagine how they would eat these. They are too thick for cheese or cold cuts. They are not sweet, so I can’t imagine eating them by themselves. The size, shape, and the thickness appear to be designed for something specific. Perhaps to eat with something soupy? Anyone know?
