When the society considers you abnormal, neurotic, or pathological, and if you don’t have the courage to stand up for yourself, you would try hard to conform to the norm, which includes trying hard to get along with others who are “normal”. You even start to admire or respect them for their normalcy. You envy their normalcy because you want so much to belong to the normal world. This would lead to surrounding yourself with people who do not share the same goal. It’s a recipe for misery. It’s like being surrounded by obese people (which we are these days in the US), and assuming that their weight is the norm, you try hard to gain weight to catch up with them. I did a lot of this in my life.
